Innovation in education can only become meaningful when it improves how students learn and how teachers teach.
With this in mind, the clinical simulation team in the pediatrics course at the University of Seville has developed a pioneering learning experience which is focused on the digital evaluation of performance through the use of video observation tools, significantly improving the learning process.
This initiative is part of the educational innovation strategies promoted by the University of Seville, aimed at promoting active, reflective and evidence-based methodologies that contribute to a more complete training program for future healthcare workers.
In this blog, José Márquez Caballero, pediatrician and clinical simulation coordinator, alongside Dr Andrés Rodríguez Sacristán, subject coordinator, tell us about how the University of Seville uses Codimg to aid these innovations.

Before the digitalisation process, the evaluation of simulation exercises relied heavily on real-time observation. This meant that we could have missed important aspects of a student’s performance.
But with the introduction of digital filming and analysis with Codimg, we took a huge step towards assessment based on objective video evidence.
Thanks to this approach, teachers can now review any aspect of the simulation as many times as needed. This makes it easier to identify strengths, weaknesses and behavioural patterns.
All of this means that the feedback process is much more objective and in line with a student’s actual performance during the simulation.
As we have said, the student now receives structured feedback based on objective criteria. This is achieved through the use of the analysis of sessions using digital templates designed by the faculty themselves.
Because students can visualise their own progress and understand how their skills evolve over time, this process not only favours continuous development but also promotes critical reflection and professional self-improvement.


The implementation of this new methodology at the University of Seville has presented various challenges.
Although the use of Codimg has indeed been a key step in improving the evaluation and feedback process, there has been a learning curve.
Designing digital templates and learning how to use them accurately is a process which takes time and training.
With that being said, the initial effort has been rewarded by the results obtained - more accurate analyses, richer feedback and a notable improvement in the student’s learning experience.
In the first phase of implementation, we analysed over 40 pediatric simulation videos from two key moments of the course and, as a result, significant improvements in student performance between both periods were observed.
This demonstrates the effectiveness of video observation as a learning resource.
In addition, a final degree project focused on digital assessment in clinical simulation has been presented this year, as well as a presentation at the 2025 SESSEP (Spanish Society for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety) conference.
This demonstrates both the level of interest in digitalisation and the potential for using Codimg as a research tool.
This demonstrates the interest and research potential of the initiative.
In fact, our teaching team will continue to use Codimg for comparative research, allowing us to evaluate the evolution of learning over time when compared with more traditional systems of evaluation.

The development of digital evaluation at the University of Seville demonstrates that Codimg can bring rigor and objectivity to the evaluation process. But not only that, it also transforms how students learn, giving them the tools for self-reflection and improvement.
Thanks to the well thought out use of technology by the teaching team, simulation has become a process where observation, analysis and feedback have become integrated into the learning experience.
This initiative reinforces the commitment of the University of Seville to push for innovation and continuous improvement in higher education.
